Focus on children’s and youth perspectives: International Korczak Conference at HSD

An international conference on the critical pedagogy of Janusz Korczak was held at HSD’s Faculty of Social Sciences and Cultural Studies under the title: Children's and Youth Perspectives: Voices in Their Own Narratives and Socio-Educational Contexts. Over 100 experts from 17 countries came together to discuss current research approaches to children’s and youth perspectives and put these into socio-pedagogical, educational and social contexts.

In terms of content, the conference was closely aligned with the profile of the faculty, which is home to numerous research projects on children’s and youth lifeworlds and perspectives and also houses the Janusz Korczak archive. Korczak’s writings, which for a long time received only limited attention in German-speaking countries, are now regarded as groundbreaking in the field of childhood studies. His radical perspective on the relationship between children and adults and his emphasis on participation rights make him a central point of reference for current academic debates.

The conference was organised in cooperation with the International Korczak Association, the German Korczak society, UNESCO and the European Sociological Association and met with a great response. Participants travelled from countries including Poland, the Netherlands, Bulgaria, Italy, Spain, Greece, Israel, Ukraine and Australia. A planned session had to be cancelled at short notice as a group of teachers and youths from Ukraine were unable to arrive on time due to a nationwide power cut and interrupted train services.
